Young Masters: Shibi

Young Masters is an original series commissioned by NOWNESS China focusing on traditional Chinese cultures, and how they continue to be defined by a new generation of the country's youth. High above the clouds in a village in Mao County in Sichuan Prefecture, a post-90’s generation of young cultural guardians work to uphold the values and traditions of ancient Qiang culture. These cultural guardians, known as a ‘Shibi’, remain especially vital for a culture whose knowledge and language exist merely through practice and in sound, and without script. The role of a Shibi involves that of a priest, alongside folk rap, singing, and dance performances, amongst others. As a result, Qiang people have endowed them with a sacred status, believing that they possess a psychic power.

Smara is the city of dust, kingdom of sirocco, a surviving ruin of a suffocating region… Thousands of Sahrawis who fled Western Sahara after the war against Morocco (36 years ago) live in this refugee camp, located in the Sahara’s inhospitable north, in the middle of the Algerian hamada. They live here, under poor human conditions, thanks to international help. A small film cooperative fights, with barely any means, to elevate the voices of young Saharawis. It is one of the many Nollywoods (Hollywood of emptiness) found in Africa.

At DIFAJE, the Family and Youth Affairs Division of the Bobigny Court, the duties of young prosecutors are the same, with one exception: they deal with minors who are either victims or perpetrators of crimes. For the latter, the prosecutor is the first person they deal with in the legal system, their first point of contact. He or she is the one who gives society's initial response to a young person whose future is already uncertain. Between prevention and punishment, the magistrate's role is a delicate one. He or she must combine authority with education. He or she must deal with the reality of a complex environment and with the differences and vulnerabilities of each individual.

In 1976 Spain abandoned its last colony, the Western Sahara, in the hands of Morocco. Since then, the Saharawi people have been divided between those who stayed on their land and those who fled the Moroccan persecution. Those who escaped survive in the desert, in extreme conditions and in the face of the helplessness of the international community. This film, directed by the journalist Helena Villar, was recorded on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Sahrawi resistance and is dedicated to the struggle of the tens of thousands of inhabitants of the Western Sahara

Roots and clamor

Their desert was not the same since they last saw it. The dunes kept memories of a childhood bathed in sun and sand, when minutes passed by in a stalling time. It has been long since they moved to the city, in search of a better future. They left, switching their tents for high buildings in busy boulevards, bearing in mind their responsibility towards their society. Each step marked by the commitment to make of their training the future of their people. It is the outcry of souls deep-rooted in tradition, in culture, in the stories of their sand. The desert was not the same, it may have never been. This documental show how they left to change it.
