The important photographer and director traveled through the United States in the mid-1950s and recorded his photographic impressions of this trip in the photo book "The Americans". Schadt visits some of the places where Frank had photographed 30 years earlier, talks to the people living there and interviews Frank himself.

This film is not only about Barbara's life, but tells a story of how her family history was intertwined with the changing landscape of the West.
