Da es am Grunde dieser Schächte keinen nennenswerten Wasseraustausch gibt, tummeln sich hier nur besonders widerstandsfähige Einzeller - doch es finden sich auch Fossilien aus längst vergangenen Erdepochen. Vielfach lagen die jetzt überfluteten Höhlensysteme noch vor wenigen tausend Jahren oberhalb des Meeresspiegels, und so haben sich hier auch die Überreste zahlreicher Tiere und sogar von Menschen erhalten.
