Three months of riots and street fighting. Three months of marches and demonstrations, but the anger of Algerias Kabyle population has not diminished. This rank and file mouvement mistrusts political parties, and presents a real threat to the Algerian government. Berber-speaking, Kabylian native, director Samia Chala followed Mohand, one of the young people who initiated those riots, through his village of Avizar, 40 kilometers from Tizi Ouzou, to get the inside story. Because of her background and intimate knowledge of the region, Samia was allowed to film without any police escort, and this produced a rare document.

2006
Chahinaz is a young Algerian woman who dreams of freedom and who cannot understand why her life is being dictated to her. A student in Constantine, this young sparkling woman loves her country but is suffocated by the weight of tradition and religion. How can you change society in a country where the law officially sanctions inequality between men and women? How can women’s rights be advanced on a global level? In order to find answers to her questions, we have travelled to her country and across several continents, comparing her situation with that of other women. And also to inform those who have the power to change what Chahinaz does not accept. Chahinaz asks questions without blinkers, and seeks answers that are not just black and white. She brings a fresh and intelligent view to the condition of women in the North and the South, and in the process challenges some widely prevalent clichés about Muslim women.

But it is first a slogan, a link that acts in space and time: a few words scanded, inseparable from the history of Algerian football and therefore the relationship between France and Algeria. These encouragements born with the FLN team during the Revolutionary War and later repeated in the Algerian epic at the 2010 World Cup were taken out of the stadiums in 2019 to call for change.

Algeria, Memoirs of Raï
2001 · ★ 10
In the 1980s, Algeria experienced a tumultuous social context which reached its peak during the riots of October 88. This wave of protest, with youth as its figurehead, echoed the texts of raï singers. Thirst for freedom, misery of life and the aspirations of youth are among the main themes of their works which will inspire an entire generation. More than music, raï celebrates the Arabic language and becomes a vector of Algerian culture, thus providing the cultural weapons of emerging Algerian nationalism With Cheb Khaled, Cheb Mami and Chaba Fadela as leaders of the movement, raï is also a way of telling and reflecting the essence of Algeria in these difficult times. While the threat weighs on artists in Algeria, their exile allows raï to be exported internationally and thus, to bring the colors of Algeria to life throughout the world.
